Casablanca

Characters:

Humphrey Bogart, who played Rick Blaine, the protagonist in the movie Casablanca, was the owner of Rick's Cafe Americain. In the film Rick is first introduced as a loner, as he drinks and plays chess by himself. However Rick has a turn around as Illsa, a girl he was once in love with in Paris, shows up at his Cafe. Rick has a flashback to his time with her in Paris, and when she left him at the train station, devastated she never showed up. Although he doesn't turn back to her, he learns to overcome his apathy to become a self-sacrificing idealist, committed to helping the Allied cause in World War II.

Ingrid Bergma plays Illsa Lund a

Norwegian beautiful women, who is Victor Laszlo's wife and Rick's former lover. A devoted wife, Ilsa refuses an exit visa when Laszlo is unable to obtain one as well, saying

she prefers to wait with him and leave Casablanca together. In Paris, Ilsa had fallen in love with Rick, because at the time she had believed Laszlo was dead. When she learned her husband was still alive, she sent a note to Rick at the train station, saying she could never see him again. Despite her obvious commitment to her husband and her confessions of love to Rick both in Paris and late

r in Casablanca, she rarely displays much passion. Ultimately, the letter may be the best insight into her personality.

Paul Henreid, played Victor Laszlo, a

Czech nationalist writer and anti-Nazi partisan. Laszlo is a committed political leader. He endured time in a concentration camp, but he remains enthusiastic, courageous, and outspoken. Victor is a

devoted husband to Ilsa and is willing to sacrifice himself to ensure her safety.

Claude Rain

plays the role of

Captain Louis Renault,

Vichy France's prefect of police in Casablanca. Louis represents unscrupulous cynicism. Louis, like the Vichy government he serves and represents, has given up caring about right and wrong, and his only loyalty is to the winning side. Louis is a hypocrite, castigating Rick for allowing gambling in his bar just as he pockets his earnings for the evening. Despite his self-serving behavior and seeming amorality, Louis is always a good friend to Rick and shows signs of being a decent person at heart. At the end of the movie, this seed of decency blooms into genuine political action, as he refuses to arrest Rick and decides to join his friend in exile from Casablanca. Louis approaches everything with wit, and many of the film's best lines are his.

Ugarte played by Peter Lorre is a member of Casablanca's criminal underworld. Ugarte's business is selling letters of transit to refugees. He may be helping them escape to Lisbon, but his aim is profit, not charity. Ugarte murders the German couriers to obtain the valuable letters of transit, which he plans to sell to Laszlo for a considerable fee. He is arrested before he can complete the sale.

Rising Action

A. When Ricks at his cafe Illsa appears, his love who he hasn't seen in forever, and she's with her husband .
1.Ilsa recongnizes Sam and asks him to play a song that she loves.
2. Rick finds out that Ilsa is married to Laszlo, and is very upsett.
B. Victors plan is to make it to American and escape the Nazi's.
1. Victor needs the letters of transit that he hears that Rick has and he wants them.

Climax
A. Rick refuses on selling the letters of transit to Victor.
B. Germans begin to sing a song, when Victor hears it he orders the cafe to sing back, Germans get very angry. A result of this is this is the Germans make up a reason for Rick to shut down his cafe.
C. Ilsa attempts to get the letters of transit from Rick for Victor, by saying she still loves him.
1. Ilsa will not shoot Rick because she loves him and Rick will not give her the letters of transit. Ilsa in Paris thinks Laszlo is dead when she falls in love with Rick but he is not dead. When the Nazi's were about to invade Paris, Ilsa left Rick with just a letter because she found out that Laszlo was alive.

Falling Action
A. Rick agrees to help Ilsa and Laszlo and to get them to safety.
1. When Ilsa is in Ricks office, Laszlo walks into the cafe , and Laszlo tells Rick that he knows about him and Ilsa.
B. Rick sets up Victor and Police arrest Victor.
1. Rick tells police to let him go and wait until he has the letters of transit so they can arrest him on a greater charge.

Conclusion
A. At the airport when Ilsa and Victor are about to leave, the police turn up and Rick holds a gun to the police saying he will shoot them if they do not let Ilsa and Victor go.
1. Ilsa does not want to go and leave Rick with the Nazi's. However she later agrees to.
B. Nazi leader turns up and Rick shoots him and kills him. Police does not rate Rick our and they become friends as the plane leaves.
