History is "his story"

Voltaire's quote could have multiple interpretations. However, I believe that by saying "History is a lie commonly agreed upon" he meant that history is never one hundred percent reliable. History is the product of the many different views and perspectives of the people who came before us. As mentioned in class, when we were younger, little did we know that we were told quite a few lies about history. It was commonly agreed upon in elementary school that Pilgrims dressed a certain way and had feasts, when in reality none of that was close to the truth. We we're also taught that Columbus discovered America, when in fact there were already Native Americans living here. All these years they had us believing myths, but why? History is something written from someones point of view, therefore we have no way of knowing otherwise, that is why we believe what we are told today.
